TITLE: THE WORD OF GOD
TEXT: PSALM 119: 8-12
(8) I will keep thy statutes: O forsake me not utterly.
(9) Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word.
(10) With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments.
(11) Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.
(12) Blessed art thou, O Lord: teach me thy statutes.
KEY VERSE: PSALM 119:4
Thou hast commanded us to keep thy precepts diligently.
A metaphor taken from the purifying of metals is employed here. It means that everything that God has pronounced is pure, without dross. God’s Word is free from any mixture of error, from all falsehood. The whole scripture is both pure and purifying. We have not read the scriptures correctly if the exercise has not had a definite purifying purpose; which is that the sons of men might, through reading and applying its messages to their lives, become the sons of God.
Coming from the God of truth, who cannot lie, it is called “the Scriptures of truth”. Whatever tests the Bible may be subjected to, it is always like gold: it bears the fire and comes out with the same purity, beauty and weight. Every promise is true, every doctrine is pure; every commandment is right, and every prophecy is sure. Every one of them is free from mixtures and inventions of men. The scripture must confirm every revelation message before it is accepted.
Since the Bible finds its origin in the mind of God, it cannot be anything but perfect. Any addition or subtraction contaminates its declared purity and opens the way to errors and corruption. The scriptures retain their life-changing face and mighty power only when preached and believed in its pure, unadulterated form. As gold loses some value when mixed with dross, so the Word of God becomes powerless to save anyone if mixed with private interpretations of men.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: The whole scripture is both pure and purifying.
